4 Clever Ways to Encourage Family Mind/Body Balance
Balance is a tricky thing, isn’t it? Just when you think you’ve got it down, things shift and send you for a loop.
I seem to be the one always worried about keeping everyone healthy and maintaining my family’s mind/body balance… whether they like it or not sometimes.
The key here is to do the things that are going to keep your family healthy and promote mind/body balance without being pushy or rubbing it in their faces. Sometimes you have to find subtle, dare I say sneaky, ways of keeping them on track.
1. Plate in the kitchen
When I was a kid, food went in serving dishes on the table and everyone filled their plate from there. This often led to mindless overeating because it was so easily accessible or using the excuse of “there’s only a little bit left in the dish.”
Yes, we were all fairly round children.
As an adult, I’ve learned the best way to combat this is to portion the meal out onto everyone’s plate in the kitchen and then take the plates to the table.
Not only are we modeling healthy portions for kiddo, we’re setting up habits that will hopefully last a lifetime. Once in awhile, she’ll ask to get seconds and we always walk her through really *thinking* if she’s still hungry or not. Sometimes she is, sometimes she isn’t, and sometimes she’s not sure so she’ll sit at the table with us for a few minutes until she can discern one way or the other.
2. Schedule movement as a family
In the Spring & Fall, we love to go for an easy family hike on Saturday mornings. Even though I’m not much of an outdoor person, it’s nice to get everyone together (even one or two of the dogs) to spend some time outside.
Let’s be real, though, we live in the state of Georgia so we’re not doing any hiking in the dead heat of Summer. When it’s too hot, we’ll often just go for a walk in the evenings on the weekends or even schedule an indoor activity with lots of movement like going to the trampoline park or roller skating. Even hitting up a convention like DragonCon or indoor festival such as Japan-fest are great ways to get a ton of walking in without even realizing it.
I’m a firm believer that the most important thing you can do to stay mentally sharp & nimble is to read. Fiction, non-fiction, news, whatever… just do it off the screen.
Yes, I mean actual books, magazines or newspapers. How shocking.
I know, how shocking.
It just looks like you’re playing on your phone or tablet, even if you are reading, plus it’s good to give our eyes a break once in awhile.
Let your kids see you reading for pleasure or curiosity’s sake. The act of seeing it as a normal part of everyday life will have a massive impact.
Case in point: Guy doesn’t love to read so doing it for pleasure is just not something he ‘gets.’ He didn’t grow up in a house where his parents did much reading; it was mostly TV.
Kiddo has been expected to read a minimum of 30 minutes daily since she came to live with us a few years ago. It’s one of the ways we’ve been able to get her reading, writing, and vocabulary up to her grade level from a significant deficit.
Now, it’s a massive treat to go to the used bookstore and come out with armloads of books. Kiddo looks forward to it and knows we won’t go until she’s read everything from the last haul.
4. Address support needs simply
